The notion that you could be flying in an electric airplane to do your traveling may at first sound laughable, but some major manufacturers are researching in that direction. Think about it, if electric flight could be perfected, the 3 percent of the United States overall carbon dioxide emissions could nearly be eliminated. My feeling is that hydrogen airliners will be more commercial airliners before electricliners are ever viable.
Airliner manufacturers like Boeing are currently experimenting with electric engines powering a conventional propeller. Now it it said that they will not replace conventional jet engines, but the fuel cells and electric motors could one day replace gas turbine auxillary power units.
The good news is that in the last three decades airliners have tripled their efficientcy but still yet domestic aircraft emissions to rise by 60 percent by 2025. Environmentalists are now though pushing the Fed to further force the airliners to be more efficient, petitioning the EPA to force new regulations.
Breakthroughs and Research
It may become possible one day for hydrogen propulsion airliners to be use. Hydrogen, the primary fuel of choice for Iceland, is one of the worlds cleanest burning fuels omitting a water vapor. Scientists are currently working on designs that can provide power jet engines.
Electric and Hydrogen Fuel Cell flights are currently still in the research stages, but its coming. Electric motors in past airline experiments have been too heavy to get off the ground. For electric motors to work for thrust they must be high power, lightweight and compact but the current magnets in electric motors are far to heavy; however, a superconducting electric motor would be lightweight and far more efficient. Whats more is that an electric motor would be quiet and eco-friendly.
This type of superconducting electric motor is said to only be possible using liquid hydrogen fuel cell which will produce zero emissions during flight. This type of tehnology will offer four times the amount of power to the engines of the same weight in jet fuel.
If only would could get passed the issue of flying around in a supersonic Hindenburg.
